Goddess of Victory: Nikke is an ecchi Gacha-style waifu collector, a third-person shooter made for mobile. Developed by SHIFT UP, a Korean company also working on Project Eve. Having had its Global closed beta test just recently (Aug 1 – Aug 9), the game is set to release later this year, 2022 – Available on the Apple app store and Google Play.
Created using Unity, NIKKE utilizes Live2D tech to bring its characters to life with buttery smooth animations. The game is localized in English for the western audience with full English support behind it for a lasting community.
Take control of various resistance fighters known as Nikke and begin the battle for humanity’s future in one of the most visually pleasing Gacha games in the current market. NIKKE Gameplay
Battle against hostile machines in fast-paced third-person real-time combat by forming a squad of sexy waifus, each holding a unique weapon and set of skills for you to plan out a winning strategy.
By advancing the story and doing battle, you gain currency used to unlock new waifus in the typical randomized Gacha style. To collect them all is your ultimate objective, but you are in it for the story, of course…
Story
Earth sieged by hostile machines, mankind stands on brink of utter destruction. Their only hope, project NIKKE, manufactured resistance fighters consisting of mostly women, ready to put their lives on the line for the safety of humanity.
As the last corners of Earth get invaded by the evil alien machines known as Raptures, one city remains to put up a final fight. An underground metropolis known as Ark plays a vital role in the battle against good and evil, a home to mankind’s remaining survivors.
Squads
Tied to each other by the story and world they exist in, Nikkes are artificially crafted individuals who each belong to a certain squad within the ARK, a city for remaining survivors trying to exist in a functioning society in midst of mechanical chaos.
As of right now, there are five squads announced; Elysion, Missilis Industry, Tetra Line, Pilgrim, and the latest being A.C.P.U (Ark Central Police Unit). Each squad consists of powerful fighters with a common cause to rid the world of hostile machines.
Chapters
You will be advancing the linear storyline through chapters, each focusing around the struggle of humanity but also a specific Nikke. With consistent content updates, new chapters will be introduced that continue the story while introducing new enemies and bosses to battle, thus keeping the game fresh.
Characters
Though there is no official announcement that I know of, it appears that NIKKE will launch with over 40 characters, based on my own research on the Japanese version of the game.
Each waifu manages to capture a unique look and personality. From gun to armor and hairstyle, no two girls seem to look the same.
More characters are set to be introduced as we approach the release date, and the developer will be focusing on bringing new characters consistently to keep the game fresh after the release.
The characters are fully voice-acted both in the story and in combat. Those who enjoy playing with Japanese voices while keeping the game in English should be able to do so, it seems.
View mode
Like any good Waifu collector, NIKKE lets you view each character in its full glory, poke them for interaction, and simulate combat in target range with no real threat as you “appreciate” their skills in firearms.
Combat
NIKKE places importance on the characters’ behinds without compromising the quality of gameplay.
From a list of unlocked Nikkes, you are able to form your own squad to take into battles. Each girl wields a personalized weapon that provides a unique playstyle, one that can be switched in the middle of combat at any given time. It is recommended to do so often to take advantage of the characters’ unique guns and abilities.
The distance of enemies, their type, and their behavior in combat are designed to provide a challenge to the player that rewards quick reaction time and wise use of teamwork within the squad in different situations.
Nikkes can equip armors such as headgear, vests, gloves, and boots to bolster their defense against enemy attacks. There are also other means to strengthen the characters that make them even more appealing addition to your squad.
Each Nikke comes with a different set of skills that can be leveled up. These skills provide both active and passive abilities that keep the flow of combat responsive and interesting. Nikkes also have their own unique ultimate moves that can turn the tide of battle at crucial moments. They can be chained with each other to deal a devastating burst of damage to the enemy.
A class system provides a strategic element in forming a squad. Between Defenders who specialize in protecting their allies to improve the survival rate and typical damage dealers favoring maximum power over armor, you can form a squad of any NIKKE available to you and prioritize the area of combat that best suit your playstyle.
Gacha mechanics
Similar to many Gacha games out there, NIKKE features multiple in-game currencies that are used to purchase and unlock items, characters, and other things.
Naturally, the player will be striving towards unlocking as many new characters as possible but within the Gacha system, there are duplicates, meaning characters that the player may have already unlocked before.
The business model is still a little foggy at this point with no clear picture of how the developer plans to monetize the game exactly. We can expect some form of premium Gacha tickets to unlock characters even faster, but beyond that, anything and everything is still on the table to make or break the player experience. Whether NIKKE will be spared from artificially crafted playtime restrictions and predatory microtransactions is yet to be seen.
Aside from the Gacha system, some waifus are set to be unlocked only through special time-exclusive events. There are daily login bonuses and events to encourage players to return to play often.
NIKKE Adult Content
Despite providing no actual hentai in it, NIKKE makes up for this with its beautiful art style and characters designed to capture your attention with its sexy and cute waifus displaying their assets during combat curtained behind revealing clothing.
The main attraction of NIKKE is quite obvious and it has managed to capture a wide audience for a good reason. Waifu collectors are nothing new in the Gacha market but the way SHIFT UP goes about it has a surprisingly new and exciting feeling to it. Now the focus is entirely placed around the characters’ rear providing consistent eye candy while the player is expected to focus on the action happening on the screen. The experience may not be exactly what we hoped for in a game made for adults but it certainly can be arousing even with the lack of nudity.
For better or worse depending on your stance on the matter, among its many characters, NIKKE features lolis and there are plenty of them to choose from. Upon closer inspection, the developers seem to not shy away from providing revealing clothing for some of these characters, though possible western censorship may be placed on them.
