The development of the awaited game Almastriga: Relics of Azathoth has been officially terminated. This news was shared by the creator Taboolicious on Twitter/X on June 26, 2024.
Further elaboration was given on their Steam community page, which states the following:
“After years of working on this project with the best hopes and attitude from all the devs, we have to drop it. All coders have moved on to other projects rendering this game impossible to continue. We on the process of taking it down, but if you already purchased it, it will remain in your library. Thank you kindly for everything, it was quiet the ride… its time to rest and rebuild” – End of quote.
Further details were provided exclusively to supporters on Patreon:
“All Coders have moved on to other projects rendering the project impossible to continue. It got to a point where everyone here was basically working for free and tons of personal investment, but I no longer can produce this on my own. Patreon will be closed effective next…” – End of quote.
Steam Early Access Situation
While Almastriga received limited reviews during its Early Access phase on Steam, the feedback was mostly negative. Players highlighted significant technical flaws, noting that the game was nearly unplayable — a surprising condition given the expected imperfections typical of Early Access titles, which are usually addressed over the course of development.
While speculative, it’s reasonable to assume that the initial negative reception from players had a significant impact on the developers at Taboolicious. With development transitioning to personal investment without financial compensation, it’s understandable if the developers are hesitant to continue working on a project that may not gain traction upon release.
What’s next for Taboo
Following Almastriga’s disappointment, the creator has gone back to his roots as an NSFW artist on Twitter, using his personal account Taboo-Mommies (@Taboo_Comics). The game’s unique art style was a standout feature that initially showed great promise. For fans of this artistic style, you can discover more by following Taboo on Twitter/X. As things calm down, it appears Taboo will soon be offering commissions for those interested.
Hopefully, following Almastriga’s setback, the artist will recover and aim to deliver an improved experience with a new title in the future. While Almastriga demonstrated promising concepts, its execution fell short. With adequate budget and resources, there’s potential for something truly remarkable to emerge.
